The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Robert L. Donnett, United States Navy, for heroic conduct on 12 June 1944. Seeing two soldiers struggling in the water after their craft had capsized between Mono and Stirling Islands, Chief Donnett dived over the side of his boat and swam to the more exhausted soldier who was floating face down. He succeeded in getting the helpless man in the boat and administered artificial respiration until the craft docked, undoubtedly saving the man’s life.
