The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Gerald G. Hogan, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while piloting a Torpedo Bomber attached to the U.S.S. CARD (CV-11) during August 1943. Lieutenant Hogan sighted and attacked a fully surfaced U-boat. He boldly flew in against heavy anti-aircraft fire to deliver two perfectly executed bombing attacks which probably destroyed the submarine.
