The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Commander John McWhorter, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as commanding officer of a destroyer escort during July 1944 in the Atlantic. Lieutenant Commander McWhorter located an enemy ship and made an extremely accurate attack which destroyed the vessel.

Lieutenant Commander McWhorter sighted and attacked an enemy ship and assisted in destroying it with accurate and effective gunfire.
