Headquarters, XVIII Airborne Corps, General Orders No. 16 (December 1, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Spros Gogos (ASN: 19083123), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 517th Parachute Infantry Regimental Combat Team, 13th Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces near Grossetto, Italy, on 18 June 1944. Technician Fifth Grade Gogos was with his company when the leading elements moved into an anti-personnel mine field in which many men were wounded, both as a result of the mines and heavy artillery fire. Without hesitation and fully aware that his actions might cost him his life, he entered the mine field. While administering aid to the wounded in the field, Technician Fifth Grade Gogos himself was wounded severely. In spite of this, he continued to render medical attention to others of his comrades and directly was responsible for saving the lives of seven of them. Throughout the entire service he was under intense shelling and at no time did he seek cover for protection for himself. During the action he was mortally wounded. Technician Fifth Grade Gogos’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
