The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate William J. Warren, United States Navy, for heroic conduct when fire broke out under a truck load of live depth charges at the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia, on 17 September 1943. Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate Warren remained at his post and directed his men in a heroic attempt to remove aircraft from the danger area. Although severely wounded in the ensuing explosion, he worked desperately to rescue his men still remaining in the burning hangar.
