The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate John G. Mackay, United States Navy, for heroic conduct while on board a landing ship in a passenger status en route to Hopoi on 12 September 1943, when his ship was struck by a bomb during an air attack. Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate Mackay heroically fought the fires that ensued and assisted in caring for the wounded and in removing the dead. He preserved for air technical intelligence purposes much extremely valuable enemy equipment.
