The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Motor Machinist’s Mate Frederick G. Humphreys, United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving aboard the U.S.S. SUSAN B. ANTHONY when the ship was sinking in the Bay of Seine on 7 June 1944. Chief Motor Machinist’s Mate went to the assistance of an officer who had fallen through an opening in the deck and was over his head in water and oil. Although he could not swim, he rescued the other officer from possible death.
