The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Petty Officer Second Class Arthur Jones, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while attached to the U.S.S. COREY (DD-463) when it was sunk as the result of shellfire from shore batteries off the St. Marcouf Islands on 6 June 1944. Petty Officer Jones saved the life of a shipmate by holding him up in the water for two hours, although badly wounded himself. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
