The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign [then Yeoman First Class] John H. Gillmore, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. Serving aboard a submarine during three highly successful war patrols in the Southwest Pacific Area, Ensign Gillmore performed his duties with outstanding skill and contributed to the sinking or damaging of an important amount of Japanese shipping. By his exceptional alertness and untiring efforts, he was responsible for the prompt detection of enemy surface ships and aircraft. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
