    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Herbert P. Knight, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while leading his PT-boat into combat against four enemy barges off the northern coast of New Guinea on 27 July 1943. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Knight assisted in sinking all for. Later, he contributed to the sinking of six more Japanese barges. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
