The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Commander Eddie R. Sanders, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Commander of a Bombing Squadron during World War II. Leading his Bombing Squadron in a fierce attack on Nauru at dusk, Commander Sanders flew in low through intense gunfire and vigorously bombed his target. Although a damaged plane of his squadron collided with his own during the engagement, he skillfully maneuvered his stricken craft and led the squadron back to base, making a successful landing.
