Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 330 (September 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Petty Officer Third Class Marion A. Porter, United States Navy, for gallantry in action when the U.S.S. LANSDALE (DD-426) was sunk on the night of 20 April 1944. Petty Officer Third Class Porter remained at his station as gunner of an anti-aircraft gun, although suffering from a broken leg. When his injuries made it impossible for him to carry out his duties any longer, he dragged himself clear of the vicinity without assistance in order not to interfere with the operation of the gun. After abandoning ship he remained in the water for over three hours, bearing his intense pain in silence. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
