The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Moses Dunton, United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct as a crew member of Barge 651 on 27 November 1943. Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Dunton and his comrades observed the crash of a PBY-5A in Summer Bay, Alaska. They brought the barge alongside the crashed plane and risked their lives in saving the ten officers and men of the plane crew. Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Dunton dived into icy waters during the rescue operations and had to be treated later for exposure.
