The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Aviation Radioman Third Class Earl James Gibson, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving in a Patrol Plane during an attack on an enemy submarine during World War II. Aviation Radioman Third Class Gibson coolly and courageously operated his camera in the face of withering anti-aircraft fire from a surfaced submarine to photograph the engagement. He remained steadfastly at his hazardous post until he was mortally wounded.
