Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 328 (July 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Harry Edward Mackey, Jr. (NSN: 6261465), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as plane captain of a Patrol Plane during an anti-submarine sweep during World War II. Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Mackey deliberately and coolly directed the orderly parachuting of the crew when the plane was forced down at sea. He placed himself in the position of the last man to jump. His calm judgment contributed materially to the saving of several lives.
