The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain Thomas C. Chezik, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while attacked to the U.S.S. LST-379 during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. Boatswain Chezik directed a battle against flames which swept his ship when hostile bullets and bombs punctured gasoline tanks. Remaining in a spreading pool of gasoline, he contributed greatly to the safety of the ship during the hazardous assignment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
