The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Marcus A. Roby, Jr., United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct while serving aboard the U.S.S. HENLEY (DD-391) on 3 October 1943. After ascertaining that all his men were clear of the engine room during the sinking of the U.S.S. HENLEY by a Japanese torpedo, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Roby supervised removal of wounded from the fire room and remained aboard to clear additional life rafts until the decks about him were completely awash. After abandoning ship, he returned to the area to rescue a shipmate.
