The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Harvey Wilburn Criswell, United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy controlled waters during World War II. Serving as Executive Officer of the U.S.S. GRAYLING (SS-209) during three war patrols in enemy waters, Lieutenant Criswell maintained his ship in material efficiency and was responsible for highly effective depth control of his vessel during offensive attacks and later for her successful evasion of the enemy.
