The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Engineman Frank W. Nettleship, Jr., United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters from January to April 1943. Throughout the hazardous patrols of his submarine in Japanese waters, Chief Engineman Nettleship maintained the electrical apparatus in excellent operating condition. On one occasion he effected ingenious and expeditious repairs to special equipment which later resulted in the damaging of one hostile vessel and the beaching of another and, subsequently, the complete destruction of two more. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
