Manry, III, United States Naval Reserve, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States when attached to the U.S.S. BISCAYNE (AVP-11) during the invasion of Italy in 1944. Lieutenant Manry unhesitatingly led a fire-fighting party aboard a merchant ship which had been struck by an enemy bomb and set afire. The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant John T. Manry, III, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as Officer-in-Charge of the boat carrying a fire and rescue party during World War II. Lieutenant Manry came alongside the fire-swept LST-158 despite continuous explosions and effected the rescue of a helplessly wounded Army officer. He removed him from the blazing deck during an enemy air attack and evacuated him to safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
