    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Edward G. Campbell, United States Naval Reserve, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star for gallantry in action as Executive Officer, Navigator, and Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. TIRANTE (SS-420) during the SECOND War Patrol of that submarine in the enemy-controlled waters of the East China and Yellow seas from 20 May 1945 to 19 July 1945. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Edward G. Campbell, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as Communications Officer and member of the torpedo control party of the U.S.S. GRAYLING (SS-213) throughout numerous attacks on hostile shipping in enemy controlled waters during World War II. Lieutenant Campbell rendered invaluable service. On one occasion he skillfully obtained ranges to the target which enabled his vessel to sink an enemy ship. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
