(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Commodore [then Captain] Roger E. Nelson, United States Navy, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Landing Craft and Bases, 11th Amphibious Force, during World War II.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Roger E. Nelson, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while commanding an attack group during the assault on Sicily in July 1943. Captain Nelson conducted and correlated the movement of ships and craft offshore and supervised the unloading activities on the beach. He effectively met all large needs for support and maintenance.
