Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 326 (May 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Jack K. Gierisch, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during World War II. Emerging from a cloud and spotting a hostile submarine surfaced dead ahead, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Gierisch went into a dive which enabled his bow gunner to open fire with a .50-caliber machine gun into the conning tower. Leveling out, he pressed home a bombing attack. Two of the explosions obliterated the swirl of the diving submarine and were followed by a large oil slick.
