The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant William H. McClaskey, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. As Officer of the Deck aboard a submarine in Japanese waters, Lieutenant McClaskey greatly assisted on numerous occasions in sighting the enemy and enabling his own vessel to close within effective range. He contributed materially to the destruction of 12 enemy vessels and the damaging of two more. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
