The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Harold R. Fleck, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. When a causeway being moved inshore by his vessel struck a mine, resulting in many casualties, Lieutenant Fleck skillfully beached the crippled ship under concentrated fire, discharged his vital cargo and retreated without further damage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
