The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fourth Grade John Gettman (ASN: 17011861), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with 4th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), 4th Cavalry Group (Separate), in action against enemy forces on 19 June 1944, in France. During a dismounted attack on a German-held town, Corporal Gettman was wounded by fire from a well-emplaced German machinegun nest. Despite his handicap and with utter disregard for his own safety, he advanced toward the enemy position armed with hand grenades and a submachine gun. Through heavy enemy fire he made his way to the machine gun nest and destroyed it and the crew. This fearless and courageous action set an inspiring example to his comrades who resumed the attack and drove the enemy from the town. Technician Fourth Grade Gettman’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
