The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Commander William Everitt Rowbotham (NSN: 0-79066), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Torpedo Bomber attached to Escort Scouting Squadron ELEVEN in combat against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area from 1 February to 9 March 1943, and from 5 June to 25 July 1943. In the face of heavy fighter opposition and fierce and accurate anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Rowbotham attacked an enemy task force of sixteen destroyers of the newest and largest type, and by his skillful airmanship and great courage contributed materially to the success of his squadron. During his tour of duty he participated in twenty-nine missions against hostile shore installations and shipping, despite fierce enemy opposition, leading both daylight and night raids against Japanese vessels in a strongly defended area, and also took part in the first attack against Kahili airfield ever made by torpedo bombers. His outstanding ability and daring leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
