The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade M. M. Tomme, Jr. (NSN: 0-251391), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a carrier-based fighter plane in the vicinity of the Bonin and Mariana Islands in June 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Tomme pressed home bold attacks against hostile shipping and shore installations. In an attack on Iwo Jima on 15 June, he shot down one intercepting fighter and, four days later, shot down two hostile planes that were part of a large striking force.
