The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Fredereick R. Stieglitz (NSN: 0-157287), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while flying a carrier-based fighter plane in support of our landings at Hollandia, New Guinea, on 18 June 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Stieglitz encountered two enemy fighters. He fought his ship with outstanding skill and shot down one plane and severely damaged the other. On another occasion he intercepted a Japanese dive bomber which was attempting to track our fleet and sent it crashing into the sea after a bitter engagement.
