(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fifth Grade Alyre F. Gauthier (ASN: 31107327), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 645th Tank Destroyer Battalion, attached to the 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Keyrollen, France, on 20 August 1944. When German troops ambushed the armored car in which Corporal Gauthier was gunner, he stuck to his weapon. He kept firing when his commander and driver were killed, when his assistant was wounded, and when an exploding shell set the vehicle aflame. Only when the gas tank exploded did Corporal Gauthier stop firing when the blast threw him out of the car. Technician Fifth Grade Gauthier’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
