Smith (NSN: 0-390318), United States Navy, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot in Bombing Fighting Squadron EIGHTY-THREE (VBF-83) over Nansei Shoto and Kyushu, Japan areas, from 18 March to 2 May 1945.
