Searls (NSN: 0-114683), United States Naval Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Commander of a Patrol Bomber in Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED FOUR (VB-104), over the Solomon, Gilbert and Caroline Islands, Bismarck Archipelago area, from 20 August 1943 to 7 March 1944.
