(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Eugene Daniel Gates (ASN: 35882637), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Bundenthal, Germany, from 19 to 23 December 1944. For three days, shrapnel killed two officers and wounded several men, including his platoon’s remaining officer. Machine gun fire from pillboxes, one of which was fifty feet from the first house, poured into the buildings. The bullets whined through the think walls and made life a torture to the men hugging the floors on the inside. On the second day, Private Chambers climbed to the dangerous second story of the house and from an exposed position at a window he blasted the nearest pillbox with three perfectly aimed rifle grenades. Private Gates’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
