Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 223 (August 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Glenn H. Gass (ASN: 0-1315814), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in Germany while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 301st Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division. On 24 February 1945, Lieutenant Glass courageously led his platoon in a spirited attack against a strongly fortified enemy position in the Siegfried Line near Serrig, Germany. Wounded in the initial assault, he pressed the attack in the face of withering hostile machine gun fire until wounded a second time. In spite of his wounds, this intrepid officer crawled to a more advantageous position in advance of his assault forces where he continued to direct them until the enemy stronghold was captured and consolidated. Lieutenant Gass’ gallant tenacity and heroic leadership resulted in his forces gaining a secure foothold in the Siegfried Line. Although he later died of the wounds received his supreme devotion to duty lives on as an inspiration to the men with whom he fought.
