Murphy (NSN: 2586091), United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Turret Gunner on a Navy Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron TWENTY-FOUR (VT-24), embarked in U.S.S. SANTEE (CVE-29), over Nobara Airfield, Jiyako Jima, on 23 April 1945.
