The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Garger (ASN: 32001180), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, on 25 April 1943. While serving as a rifleman during a counterattack against the enemy, under devastating fire and without regard to personal safety, Private First Class Garger crawled forward to a heavy machine gun position where the crew had become casualties. He restored the gun to action under a terrific enemy fire attack and delivered renewed fire with devastating effect o the assaulting enemy. His heroic action closed a gap in the lines and greatly aided in smashing the enemy’s counterattack. It was while delivering the renewed fire that Private First Class Garger lost his life. Private First Class Garger’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
