Mather (NSN: 0-116825), United States Naval Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a torpedo bomber in Composite Squadron SEVENTY-FIVE (VC-75), embarked in U.S.S. OMMANEY BAY, during the Battle for Leyte Gulf on 25 October 1944.
