Headquarters, U.S. Army-North African Theater of Operations, General Orders No. 22 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Armor) Henry Edward Gardiner, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 13th Armored Regiment, Combat Command B, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia, in February 1943. Lieutenant Colonel Gardiner distinguished himself by his brilliant defensive action in covering the withdrawal of the 1st Armored Division from Sbeitla, following the German breakthrough at a road pass. He and his superior officers decided against a continuance of earlier tactics, which had proved a failure. Instead of expending his tanks in a charge against the enemy on the Faid plain, Colonel Gardiner withdrew to Sbeitla under severe enemy pressure. His tank was hit and one of his crews was wounded. Although under heavy fire, Colonel Gardiner transferred the wounded man safely to another tank. Almost immediately he found himself surrounded by enemy tanks. Taking refuge in a ditch, Colonel Gardner hid until dark, then tramped 29 miles through the enemy lines, rejoined his battalion, jumped into another tank and led the successful withdrawal of the rest of his armored battalion. Largely through his efforts, what was left of the American armored units pulled back without loss so that they were able to fight again in bloody Kasserine valley. Lieutenant Colonel Gardiner’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
