The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant James G. Leonard (NSN: 0-106859), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a fighter pilot attached to a Bombing Squadron in the Central and Southwest Pacific from January to June 1944. Lieutenant Leonard was gallant and daring in many combat missions against hostile shipping, supply dumps and gun positions. He attacked a large cargo ship in Tanapag harbor, Saipan, and diving low bombed the vessel accurately and skillfully, contributing materially to her final destruction.
