The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Harry Grant Gamble, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Moncourt Woods, France, on 22 October 1944. When his company was pinned down by intense enemy machine gun fire, with utter disregard for his own safety, Private First Class Gamble volunteered to silence the weapon and fearlessly advanced alone, armed only with a demolition charge. He skillfully maneuvered to within a few feet of the enemy emplacement and lit the charge and threw it into the machine gun position, destroying the gun and killing the crew of six. His heroic, dauntless actions and unflinching devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
