The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Paul Enoch Galloway (ASN: 39679435), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Radio Operator on a B-17 Heavy Bomber in the 366th Bombardment Squadron, 305th Bombardment Group (H), EIGHTH Air Force, while participating in a bombing mission over enemy territory in continental Europe on 30 December 1942. On the return trip from an operational mission the aircraft in which Sergeant Galloway was serving as radio operator and gunner was separated from its formation and was attacked by a large force of enemy fighter airplanes. A cannon shell burst in the radio room severely wounded him, but in spite of his wounds he continued firing his gun on the attacking enemy airplanes until they were driven off. The courage and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Galloway enabled the crew and aircraft to return safely to a friendly base.
