Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 485 (December 13, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph Schussler Galloway (ASN: 0-1283407), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 161st Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 26 July 1943, in the vicinity of Munda Airfield, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, while continuing to lead his platoon after he was seriously wounded. Penetrating a labyrinth of well-camouflaged Japanese automatic weapons to seize a hill in the attack on Munda Airfield, Lieutenant Galloway was hit by sniper fire which severed an arm artery. His insistence on remaining in command and his superb qualities of leadership instilled renewed confidence in his men at a moment when they were shaken by what seemed an uncertain errand through unseen sources of fire. He collapsed after he had gained another fifty yards but brushed aside the proffered aid of his men and urged them all to drive on relentlessly toward their objective. When the platoon was making its way successfully up the hill again, Lieutenant Galloway crawled back alone.
