Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 331 (October 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Ensign Harold L. Handshuh (NSN: 0-176510), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while piloting a fighter airplane on an anti-submarine patrol with a torpedo bomber, during World War II. Ensign Handshuh sighted and attacked a U-boat, scoring many hits as he strafed it. Under the protection afforded by his strafing attack, the torpedo bomber was able to deliver an accurate depth-bomb attack which probably destroyed the submarine.
