During the fight for Okinawa, Sergeant Funk, with utter disregard for his own life, threw himself upon a grenade that landed in the midst of his unit. He absorbed the greater portion of the murderous fragments within his own body. His heroic sacrifice saved all except himself from injury and stimulated the subsequent attack on the enemy which culminated in the successful completing of the company’s mission. Sergeant Funk’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 96th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
