(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Chester Charles Funk, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Cannon Company, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 23 and 24 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Sanananda, New Guinea. Preceding the battle for Sanananda, a sap had been dug to within fifteen feet of the enemy trench. Despite repeated enemy attacks Private Funk, although wounded, held the sap through the night with hand grenades. At dawn four other men crawled forward from the sap, got a foothold in the trench, and held long enough for the rest of the force to arrive and clear it out completely. Private Funk’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
