Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 448 (November 28, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Medical Corps) Norman Friedman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 112th Medical Battalion as Regimental Surgeon for the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in administering at to the wounded at Bilbilo Hill, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 2 August 1943. Captain Freidman, in plain view of the enemy and with utter disregard of the personal danger, crawled through a hail of fire toward a wounded officer. Shell fragments struck his helmet and momentarily stunned him. Recovering, he pushed forward again and found the officer already dead. Crawling to another wounded officer, he administered first aid and later directed his evacuation. Seven wounded men were brought in form another regiment and in the same fire-swept area, Captain Friedman moved from one to the other giving aid and supervising evacuation with calm courage. Captain Friedman’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
