The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Samuel E. Coleman (NSN: 0-84291), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Patrol Plane Commander in action against an enemy Japanese submarine in August 1942. Having sighted the submarine, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Coleman bombed the enemy vessel and then launched a cool and determined gunfire attack. His fine performance and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
