The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class John Philip Witzke, Jr. (NSN: 6022849), United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct as a survivor of a crashed plane afloat in a rubber raft during World War II. Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Witzke exhibited great skill in administering first aid to one of his fellow survivors. He also showed expert seamanship in handling the raft during the six-hour period before he was rescued.
