The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Chief Machinist’s Mate Robert E. Small (NSN: 2914350), United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy controlled waters during World War II. During three war patrols of his submarine in Japanese-controlled waters, Chief Machinist’s Mate Small maintained the engines and other vital equipment in excellent condition and thus contributed materially to the combat efficiency of his vessel.
