The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Dick Griffey Futrell (NSN: 0-130222), United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct when his bomber crashed at sea near the Treasury Islands on 17 March 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Futrell struggled clear of the plane and then went to the aid of his gunner who had been knocked unconscious. He pulled the man free, quickly revived him, inflated his life jacket, and gave the man his own rubber life raft, renouncing his own chances of survival.
